The rapid spread of coronavirus has brought the world to a standstill. The Indian Government has taken numerous measures such as quarantine, nation-wide lockdown and more to control this uncertain situation. But the defence was in action constantly to control the situation.

Filtration Situation

As COVID-19 cases were increasing and reported deaths among the defence, the government reciprocated to the emergency and assigned a project to build a special medical centre building to the armed forces to treat suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients.
Also, the current hospitals were unable to house increasing number of positive cases in the town. This immediate requirement was supported by the civil consultant to build a medical centre in a strict timeframe. The consultant approached AAF for the best possible solution to meet the clean air requirements of patient wards and Class N isolation rooms.

The AAF International Solution

The special distinct project was in one of the coldest places in India. A team of AAF experts visited the site to analyse the building design and the AHU type. The standard AHU did not have provision to add HEPA and the addition of a HEPA filter could increase the load on the AHU and power consumption.

Witnessing the building design, AAF engineers proposed clean air solutions for their dormitory rooms and isolation rooms. Dormitory rooms were designed to treat suspected COVID cases and healed patients and isolation rooms to treat positive cases or high-risk patients.
This special project required a quick solution which is cost-effective retrofit solution to tackle the pandemic situation.

AstroPure 500 for Dormitory Rooms:
The best recommended powerful air purifier for dormitory rooms was AstroPure 500. This product can convert any patient rooms into infection-free isolation rooms.
AstroPure 500 is a stand-alone complete air purification system to recirculate and clean the air in a controlled environment. 3-stage air purification system:
Stage 1 – Prefilter: Particulate filter to trap particulate matters and to prolongs the life span of a higher efficiency filter.
Stage 2 – Gas-Phase Filter: To effectively remove odor problems
Stage 3 – HEPA Filter: To remove indoor fine particles such as PM2.5, PM1 and bacteria and virus with an efficiency of 99.99% at 0.3μm.

AstroPure 2000

Altogether, it combines particulate, gas-phase and HEPA filters to remove airborne particles, gaseous contaminants, viruses, bacteria, fungus and molds to provide a total clean air solution. This powerful system delivers 500 CFM operating airflow.

PurAir350C for Isolation Rooms:
PurAir 350C is compact design ceiling-mounted unit integrated with three-stage of high-performance filters which can efficiently remove indoor fine particles, harmful gases, bacteria, and virus.
The machine adopts a low-noise, high-torque DC fan, and three-speed switch function. The optimized sealing structure can effectively control noise.

This quick ceiling-mounted structure design was the best solution for the 6 isolation rooms of the project. With upstream and downstream pressure drop detection port, it meets the ISHRAE standards to convert the patient rooms into isolation rooms. It also has easy-to-replace air duct adapters at both ends for the on-site installation.

Results

The civil consultants implemented the recommended solutions since they were portable, could be retrofitted and provided the required clean air solution to treat COVID-19 suspected or confirmed patients. The technical experts also trained the hospital personnel regarding the product functionality, filtration stages and its operation. The innovative products designed by AAF for the current pandemic situation were successfully installed at the medical centre.
